Chef’s Story

Photo of Chef a Belgian Malinois Military Working DogIn June 2012, we were happy to help defray the costs of veterinary treatment for medical issues for retired MWD Chef H067, a 10 yr. old Belgian Malinois adopted by Louisa Vaughn and residing in  San Antonio, TX

Louisa calls Chef “a hero for our heroes!” Chef retired at 8.5 years of age from the US Naval Station San Diego. He served 5 years as an Explosives Detect/Patrol dog. During Chef’s active duty career he did two tours to the hot sands of Iraq, and one tour in Africa. Due to Chef’s keen nose he was also sent on numerous Secret Service Missions when he was not overseas. Chef is now a Certified “WAGS Across Texas” Therapy Dog supporting MWD adoptions. He is a regal ambassador assisting our military and their families find comfort and peace and is an emotional release for times they find difficult to share. Retired Chef keeps busy at various veterans events in the role of therapy dog.
Louisa comments that “Chef’s abilities in animal assisted therapy reach much further than his personal appearances in his decorated jacket. He reaches places inside of our active duty and veterans that have rarely been touched. They relate to his military service and the pride he wears like a badge of courage. Tears appear in eyes because they understand what he endured and what he stands for. He is emotionally adept at reaching those veterans who need him the most. Being drawn to a blind wheelchair bound WWII vet, Chef was gentle, loving, and kind, a safe place for a battle buddy who understood. Chef is a therapeutic gentle soul for anyone who meets him. He truly is a Hero for our nation’s heroes.”
Chef is doing well, and loves his retirement under the caring and watchful eyes of his adoptive mom – we wish them many happy years together!
